Grave of the Fireflies
Wednesday, August 17, 2005

I have nothing to report, so I'm going to talk about a film that I saw some days ago. Be careful if you want to see it, because I'll include some spoilers.

Hotaru no Haka, known as Grave of the Fireflies outside Japan tells the story of a 14 year-old boy called Seita and his little sister Setsuko, who became orphans and homeless during World War II. They live with a distant aunt for a while but they leave as she starts treating them like if they were "greedy" and "lazy". They find a little shelter by a river, where they happily live making their own food and spending every night among the fireflies. But things get worse when they run out of money and Setsuko is diagnosed with malnutrition.

I really liked this film and its anti-war message but there are some things I don't get. For example, why does Seita spends his days playing with his sister instead of working? I know he's just 14, but many kids have to work at war times, most especially if they're in Seita's situation. I mean, his sister was dying and all he does is stealing from other people's houses. I don't get it. Another thing I don't get is why they never came back to their aunt's. Yeah, she was rude and moody, but she surely had a point. I'd also be angry if I had to take care of two kids who spend day after day in their room doing nothing, especially when one of them is old enough to understand they're going through really bad times. I know I'm being a little too mean but it saddens me to think that both Seita and Setsuko's deaths were easily avoidable.

Despiting these little facts, Grave of the Fireflies is a truly remarkable film.
