And the nominees are...
Tuesday, January 31, 2006

Who said the Oscars were boring and predictable? I'm still shocked by some of their choices. Let's do a couple of lists [you know I have a thing for them ^^]:

Happy for...

- Brokeback Mountain's 8 nominations. All of them are highly deserved.
- Felicity Huffman. Oh god, she's adorable.
- Reese and Joaquin.
- Dolly Parton for Best Original Song.
- Amy Adams. Junebug is a very, very small film, but Amy's enormous talent didn't go unnoticed.
- Matt Dillon. Tell he isn't hot.
- Rachel Weisz.
- Corpse Bride for Best Animated Feature.
- Woody Allen's 21st [!!!] nomination.

Oh, surprise!...

- All of the films nominated for Best Picture were made for less than $75 million.
- Munich and Capote getting in for Best Picture AND Director.
- Scarlett Johansson being snubbed... AGAIN!!!
- Howl's Moving Castle over more popular, big studio films like Chicken Little or Madagascar. Miyazaki is a damn genius.
- Keira Knightley instead of Ziyi Zhang, Joan Allen or Gwyneth Paltrow.
- William Hurt getting his first nomination in nearly twenty years.
- Woody Allen snubbed in Director for his excellent Match Point.
- Memoirs of a Geisha being this year's Evita. Well, this is not that surprising.
- Only three contenders up for Best Original Song.
- 14 [!!!] actors had never been nominated before.

As you can see I'm allowing comments again. Feel free to drop me a line about my new template, my sick obsession with Ang Lee's latest film or how much you love reading this shitty blog. Enjoy.

I love fake people
Sunday, January 29, 2006

I wish I could have something worth of an entry, which I don't, but a promise is a promise and here I am. I did go to Lara's place. Her brother was really nice and cute, and a great cook, so I didn't regret going there. We had some very interesting conversations regarding school, teenagers, living in the closet or rumors. Speaking of rumors, Lara told me that half my class is intrigued by my sexual orientation. And what it annoys me the most is not that they've never dared to ask me about it, the fact that angers me is that one of them is this girl who acts like if she was my best friend, and is constantly telling me how much I mean for her and stuff like that. My ass. I've seen her every fucking day since September 2004, and I can't believe she's been so fake. I was already sure about the fact that we could never be friends, but now I'm adding this to the list of reasons why I don't want her as a friend. I don't even know why I'm bothered by this.

It finally snowed today. Yay.

Busy boy
Friday, January 27, 2006

Sorry for procrastinate all through the week but I really wasn't in the mood to post as my school life has been incredibly stressing and demanding. I thought I could finally relax today but I've had a busy day as well. But I was't that lucky. Two of my former classmates asked me to be their private English tutor. Nedless to say I had to do it for free. lol. I wasn't really into the idea but it turned out to be fun. One of these girls, Lara, told me that her 25 year-old brother wants to meet me. Unfortunately not in a sexual way because he has a boyfriend and all, but he's heard about me so he was intrigued. lol. Lara said her parents won't be at home this Sunday so it'd be nice if Sara [the other girl] and I spent the day there. She said her brother will cook for us :P I actually want to go, even though it scares me to meet new people. What the hell, I'm sure it'll be nice. I don't have school this Monday, so I won't have to do any homework this Sunday. Yeah, I know this is something very irresponsible to say, but I always wait for the very last day to do my homework. I'm not a role model. ;)

I saw a movie with Dah later. Brokeback Mountain. Yes, again. And we loved it. We also went to this lovely bar to have a beer and talk about boys, routine, boys, music, boys, films and stuff like that, and it was fun. We actually did pretty much the same things we did last week but I had a great time anyway. It's fine to do something on a Friday evening.

I leave you now. I'm tired and my brain isn't working very well.

I'll post this Sunday. I promise.

Poor excuse of an entry
Monday, January 23, 2006

Current music: Heartbeats, by Jose Gonzales.

For all the ones who were ready to read something interesting or meaningful -- this is not the right place to go. lol. I've had a pretty uninstering weekend except for Brokeback Mountain, so I thought I could try to drop a few lines and call it an entry. I'm such a sad, sad blogger.

Anyway, I told you I went to see Brokeback Mountain last Friday, and I loved it to death. I didn't go alone to see it. Thank god I found Dah. lol. I swear I couldn't have gone alone to see that film. We had a great evening, actually. We had a coffee at Starbucks, went for a walk around Chueca, stole a magazine and had a beer somewhere. Just for the record, I don't even like beer that much, but I was just in the mood for a good old Coronita. So we got strangely inebriated after just one beer and were in the mood to tell each other's secrets and it was so damn funny. I want to go clubbing or something once we finish our exams.

Cris, I wish you the best of luck on your exams. Hope we can talk soon! :)

Love is a Force of Nature
Friday, January 20, 2006

It would be impossible to write something new about Brokeback Mountain. The hype around it has been enormous. I tend to get bored once something gets nothing but five-star reviews and it's all over the press. I usually feel most of these films don't deserve such accolades. Plus some books are destroyed by Hollywood when they turn into movies. However, this is not the case. It does live up to its hype. Its rave reviews and overwhelming press coverage is fully deserved. And the screenwriters made an excellent job developing the story by Annie Proulx.

I'm impressed by how Ang Lee knew exactly what the fans of the original book wanted to see. I have always admired him for his versatileness, but now I have discovered his extreme sensibility. He is also known for giving freedom to his actors to explore their characters. And he has always gotten career-best performance from them. And Brokeback is no exception. All of the actors in this film are superb, from the leads to the ones who only deliver a few lines. Heath Ledger is wonderful. He has been able to capture the fears, insecurities and doubts of Ennis amazingly well. His accent is perfect, too. Jake Gyllenhaal is marvelous as Jack, and it's a shame his performance has been somewhat overshadowed by Heath Ledger's, which has gotten better reviews. In my humble opinion, Heath is receiving all this praise because it's really surprising to see such an astonishing characterization from the star of 10 Things I Hate About You, while Jake has already been in a number of critically-acclaimed films like Donnie Darko, October Sky or The Good Girl. Michelle Williams gives a first-rate performance as Alma, Ennis's suffering wife. She's in screen for only ten minutes but she's unforgettable, and I'm glad they are finally recognizing her. The same could be said for Anne Hathaway, who is delicious as Lureen, Jack's wife. Ever since I saw her in The Princess Diaries I thought it was just a matter of time for Hollywood to discover she was talented enough to get more substantial roles in adult films. She's about to play Jane Austen, and I'm already excited about it. Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, Randy Quaid, Kate Mara, David Harbour, Peter McRobbie, Graham Beckel and especially Roberta Maxwell also manage to give terrific performances during their limited screen-time.

I highly recommend you the soundtrack album too, which includes the Golden Globe-winner A Love That Will Never Grow Old performed by Emmylou Harris, and new songs from Willie Nelson, Rufus Wainwright or Linda Ronstadt, plus Gustavo Santaolalla's haunting score. I can't begin to describe all of the things you can feel while watching Brokeback Mountain. It's unique, one of those movies you should see at least once. And if you don't believe me, go check it out.

Brokeback rides its way to the Oscars...
Wednesday, January 18, 2006

The Oscars will always be the Oscars, but I also enjoy the Golden Globes a lot every year. I tend to agree a lot more with their choices, and the telecast is more entertaining than the Oscars, but obviously not as glamorous. There were no surprises and Brokeback Mountain won 4 awards, including Best Picture [Drama] and Best Director. Sadly, neither Heath nor Michelle won in the acting categories. Poor guys, you could tell they're not used to be nominated for anything because they looked like scared puppies. lol. Walk The Line walked away [pun intended lol] with 3: Best Picture, Actor and Actress in the Comedy/Musical categories. I hope Brokeback is able to get Best Picture at the Oscars! :) Another great thing about the Globes is the speeches. Hugh Laurie, Geena Davis, Sandra Oh, Felicity Huffman, Steve Carell and Mary Louise Parker aka I just want to make out with all of you were hilarious, and S. Epatha Merkenson was moving. Hilary Swank looked gorgeous, for a change. She should get divorced more often. Mariah Carey looked like if she was about to explode. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying she's fat. She has curves, which is not a bad thing, but she always wear super tight dresses which make her look enormous. And she should talk a little more faster because she sounds retarded sometimes. Renee Zellweger looked healthly for the first time in a long, long time. She should get divorced more often, too. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are so cute. Ryan Phillipe looked drunk since he first arrived at the red carpet. Mandy and Zach are my favorite unmarried couple in Hollywood. Felicity Huffman seems to be such a great person. You could see Teri Hatcher was happy when Mary Louise Parker won the Globe over all the Housewives. She's evil.

Let's keep it short: Beautiful and well-dressed ladies: SCARLETT, hands down; Mandy Moore, Ziyi Zhang, all of the Housewives, Natalie Portman, Sandra Oh, Penelope Cruz, Evangeline Lilly

Hot hunks: Matt Dillon, Matthew Fox, Zach Braff, Brandon Routh, Patrick Dempsey, Ryan Phillipe, Josh Duhamel

What were they thinking?!: Mariah Carey, Drew Barrymore, Johnny Depp, Ellen Pompeo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and his girlfriend

Heavy makeup friends: Anne Hathaway, Keira Knightley, Debi Mazar, Cynthia Nixon

Please, do yourself a favour and shave: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Johnny Depp

Future moms: Rachel Weisz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Danielle Spencer, Mira Sorvino

I enjoy embarrassing myself
Monday, January 16, 2006

I've just attended a Q&A with Annie Proulx. She was absolutely fascinating and intelligent. They showed the trailer of Brokeback Mountain before she came in and everyone loved it. There was even three or four people on the verge of tears [including myself lol]. I also saw a very old woman [she was at least 80] asking when was the movie coming out and where she could find the book. I thought that was so cute. :)

I had the honour to ask Ms. Proulx the two worst questions of the evening, and her answers were something like this:

"I didn't dislike The Shipping News. I think they did a good job. It was shot in Nova Scotia, which was something very important for me."

"No, I don't think the success of Brokeback Mountain will have any effects on my next book."

I'm so random. lol. I'm awfully shy and my English sucks and I swear I didn't even know what was I saying. Afterwards, when she was signing my Brokeback poster, I told her that I loved her books and all that stuff [which is true] and something very corny regarding Brokeback Mountain like "Thank you for reflecting what it's like to love someone you can't be with". She seemed very flattered about it. Then I thought I hadn't embarrassed myself enough, so I asked her to have her picture taken with me. I bet she'll always remember me as that stuttering teenager that annoyed the hell out of her. lol.

I'm seeing the movie in FOUR days!

The Creep
Saturday, January 14, 2006

This was too good not to talk about it here. Remember this American guy who kept emailing and texting me during last August saying he wanted to be close friends and maybe more? Yes, the one who I inspired to write godawful poetry naming all of my qualities... Yes, the same one who I had to tell I didn't want to be friends with... Yes, the very same guy who emailed me yesterday to tell me he wanted to reactive our friendship. I know what you're thinking. Some people is just creepy and they can do nothing about it. I thought that if I ignored his email he'd never write me again, but last October he emailed me again, despiting what I had told him back in August. So I decided to write him back... in a bitchy way. Seriously, it's the meanest email I've ever written. I don't normally say this kind of things, but sometimes you need to be a real cunt to be understood. The email was as it follows:

Listen, I'm flattered by your interest in me, but I want to start a whole new chapter in my life, and unfortunately for you, I don't want you to be part of it. I'm really, really sorry if I sound harsh saying this but I just want to clear things up. Case is closed.

What do you think? It wasn't that mean after all. But the funny thing is that he actually REPLIED to that email saying this:

allright...i'll respect your wishes....all i wanted to be was friends....i have someonbe back home in the USA who loves me very much...but i wish you the very best of luck in the new chapter in your life...

He's fucking lying. He said from the very first moment I met him that he wanted to be more than friends with me. Hell, he fucking told me I defined beauty in one of his poems, for god's sake! I won't make comments about that supposed someone in the USA who loves him very much because that's just hilarious. I highly doubt he'd be harassing strangers via Internet if he had someone in real life. He even said he had been told off by several guys before. I just hope my latest email makes him realize he should change his ways. But we all know old habits die hard, baby.

Breaking boundaries
Thursday, January 12, 2006

Current music: John Wayne Gacy, Jr., by Sufjan Stevens.

I'm sorry for being a little fucker and not updating in four days, but my life consists on going to school, studying at home, taking Math lessons with my tutor and nothing else, so I guessed you wouldn't like to hear me whining about it every day. I'm still excited about 2006 for no reason... Well, there's actually a couple of reasons but I'm not telling you... Not just yet.

Despite one Utah theatre's denial to screen the movie and the ridiculous and widely ignored boycott from conservatives, Brokeback Mountain is surpassing everyone's expectations in the US. It placed #9 at the weekend box office, a very impressive position considering it's only showing in 483 theatres, among other reasons. It also has the highest per-screen average of the whole chart [about $12, 000]. But there's even more good news. As of Sunday, Brokeback had grossed $22.5 million, which was already excellent. But it has remained in the Top 10 during this week, grossing over $600, 000 every day, so it'll have reached the $30 million mark by this Sunday! In addition to this, the Golden Globes are taking place next Monday, and Brokeback is the front-runner with 7 nominations, and it'll surely grab some of those. Plus the nominations for this year's Academy Awards will be announced on the 31, and it's probably getting plenty of nominations, so many people are predicting it'll have grossed between $50-$75 million by Oscars day, and those numbers could be even higher if it gets some major awards... This is beyond amazing. Who would've have thought we'd be talking about this movie sweeping at award shows, grossing filthy amounts of money and being the front-runner for the Oscars just three or four months ago? I just can't believe it. I'm seeing it in eight days, and I'm wickedly excited about it even though I've read the short story it's based on several times and I know pretty much every single detail about the film... It's just the kind of movie which touches you deeply. I can't explain it. This movie has broken many, many boundaries. I'm one of those naive guys who think the world is really changing its view on what used to be seen as "bad"...

Are you one of them?

The torture is back
Sunday, January 08, 2006

Current music: Shattered Dreams, by Jaybee feat. Morris.

So I'm back at home ready to start school tomorrow... or maybe not. Actually, going to school is the least appealing thing in the world right now. I haven't even done half the homework I was supposed to do, and you know what, I DON'T CARE. It's not like you get expelled for doing that, plus I bet none in my class have done it, because they're as lazy as me. Holidays should be all about watching movies, going out, sleeping for hours and not doing nothing at all, but teachers think otherwise. Anyway, let's be positive, for a change.

I've only got one more thing to say:

- Saw II is fucking AWFUL. Really, fucking awful. Ugh, I get so angry whenever I think about it.

Sleepless
Thursday, January 05, 2006

It's funny how I feel really exhausted during the day but then at night I'm completely fresh. I haven't had insomnia since I started school, but for some strange reason it came back to bother me during my holidays. I've always been a night person, but this is seriously annoying. Being sleepless has its good side, though. There's a station which is airing thirtysomething very late at night, and I'm absolutely hooked on it. It's such a great show. I might write a whole post about it sooner or later.

I'm starting school in four days and I still have a ton of homework to do. I'm so irresponsible, but I don't care.

The Year
Sunday, January 01, 2006

I already told you I'm determined to make 2006 "The Year", but it's going really quietly, so far. We didn't go out last night because it was raining and we'd rented some movies and just weren't in the mood to go out, so we stayed at home and it was cool. We've decided we're going to celebrate the New Year any other day, because bars won't be as crowded, and we like being different. lol.

So this is it. It's so good to be here.
