It would be impossible to write something new about Brokeback Mountain. The hype around it has been enormous. I tend to get bored once something gets nothing but five-star reviews and it's all over the press. I usually feel most of these films don't deserve such accolades. Plus some books are destroyed by Hollywood when they turn into movies. However, this is not the case. It does live up to its hype. Its rave reviews and overwhelming press coverage is fully deserved. And the screenwriters made an excellent job developing the story by Annie Proulx.

I'm impressed by how Ang Lee knew exactly what the fans of the original book wanted to see. I have always admired him for his versatileness, but now I have discovered his extreme sensibility. He is also known for giving freedom to his actors to explore their characters. And he has always gotten career-best performance from them. And Brokeback is no exception. All of the actors in this film are superb, from the leads to the ones who only deliver a few lines. Heath Ledger is wonderful. He has been able to capture the fears, insecurities and doubts of Ennis amazingly well. His accent is perfect, too. Jake Gyllenhaal is marvelous as Jack, and it's a shame his performance has been somewhat overshadowed by Heath Ledger's, which has gotten better reviews. In my humble opinion, Heath is receiving all this praise because it's really surprising to see such an astonishing characterization from the star of 10 Things I Hate About You, while Jake has already been in a number of critically-acclaimed films like Donnie Darko, October Sky or The Good Girl. Michelle Williams gives a first-rate performance as Alma, Ennis's suffering wife. She's in screen for only ten minutes but she's unforgettable, and I'm glad they are finally recognizing her. The same could be said for Anne Hathaway, who is delicious as Lureen, Jack's wife. Ever since I saw her in The Princess Diaries I thought it was just a matter of time for Hollywood to discover she was talented enough to get more substantial roles in adult films. She's about to play Jane Austen, and I'm already excited about it. Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, Randy Quaid, Kate Mara, David Harbour, Peter McRobbie, Graham Beckel and especially Roberta Maxwell also manage to give terrific performances during their limited screen-time.

I highly recommend you the soundtrack album too, which includes the Golden Globe-winner A Love That Will Never Grow Old performed by Emmylou Harris, and new songs from Willie Nelson, Rufus Wainwright or Linda Ronstadt, plus Gustavo Santaolalla's haunting score. I can't begin to describe all of the things you can feel while watching Brokeback Mountain. It's unique, one of those movies you should see at least once. And if you don't believe me, go check it out.
